Acer Travelmate 8000 Review:

Acer has produced a laptop that is part portable and part powerhouse. Using the new Centrino chipset, code-named Dothan, the Acer Travelmate 8000 excels. Yes it offers 802.11b/g and Bluetooth wireless, but this laptop weighs seven pounds, entering the realm of desktop replacement laptop models.

But look at the results: Five hours of battery life, great graphics, a full-sized keyboard and excellent wireless speed. The Travelmate 8000 is a Centrino powerhouse. Add to that the embedded ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 with 128MB of dedicated VRAM for exceptional gameplay and graphics applications. The five hour battery life alone tells you this is no ordinary desktop replacement.

This Travelmate also features a DVD+RW multidrive complete with DVD burning software from NTI and PowerDVD for DVD viewing. Burning a DVD on this laptop is no problem with the Pentium M Dothan chipset and it's even able to handle heavy rendering.

As for ports, there are plenty. Four USB 2.0 ports on the left side are augmented by a FireWire port and mic-in, mic-out, and line-out. It even includes a 4-in-1 smart-card reader for added security. A VGA port, S-Video-Out, and DVI port round out the arsenal.

The Acer Travelmate 8000 is an extremely powerful laptop that won't leave you limited to the short battery life that is often associated with most desktop replacement models. It offers a complete feature set that covers every app including 3D gaming requirements that most laptops can't handle. Kudos to Acer for designing a sorely needed full-featured model that costs significantly less than the competition and still remains in a comfortable weight range.
